Sun City West is an unincorporated area within in Maricopa County that was designed to create an active community for adults 55 and over. Its adjoining, larger sister community is Sun City. Both are retirement communities that are very popular with snowbirds.
Before the community was constructed, most of the area was of farmland mainly growing cotton. Sun City West was constructed by Del Webb starting in the late-1970s. as Sun City began outgrowing its boundaries. Sun City West was completely built out in 1998, and another sister community, Sun City Grand, was started to the west of Grand Avenue.
Sun City West is a "city" in name only. As such, it does not have the usual city government structure. Maricopa County provides street maintenance, building and zoning codes, law enforcement and public health services.
Sun City West maintains seven golf courses four recreation centers, along with many amenities including tennis, bowling, and swimming.
